September 22-24 2018 - Raleigh, NC - 3-Day Portrait Drawing Workshop

“Drawing includes three and a half quarters of the content of painting... Drawing contains everything, except the hue.”
-- Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

Join me at East Oaks Studio in downtown Raleigh for a three day exploration of portrait drawing.

Limited to 12 students (all skill levels welcome)

Capturing a likeness is among the most elusive yet emotionally satisfying of artistic endeavors and a good drawing is undoubtedly the most critical component in achieving a good result.

Throughout my years of teaching experience, it has become so clear that the central way I can aid others in their art is by helping them become better draughtsman.  The single way I can think of to progress in my own art is to become a better draughtsman!  Most people are focused on which painting mediums to use, but the student who invests in their understanding of drawing will reap greater dividends.  I am very excited to dedicate an entire workshop to better understanding drawing, the true foundation of art making.

In this workshop I will walk students through every step necessary to create a beautifully rendered portrait drawing from life.

My demonstration and critiques will center around the elements of form and how to understand and achieve the illusion of three-dimensions in graphite and white chalk on paper.  By better understanding the importance of form the student will gain new insight into value, structure, expression and indeed, painting.

Each morning session will begin with a thorough portrait demonstration from the model including a dialogue of all key concepts, while the afternoon will focus on personal critiques.  We will progress each day, working on the same drawing, through a clear method which you will be able to easily apply to your own work.  The first day will begin with the block-in, or line drawing, which will include a discussion of both two and three dimensional conception and problem-solving strategies.  Then with a solid start, day two will be an in-depth investigation of the portrait's forms and large value relationship, as well as the practical and conceptual techniques of modeling which can often be counter-intuitive.  We will then spend our third day refining the illusive nuances which are essential to an evocative expression and striking likeness.

Although we may not touch a paint brush during the course of this workshop, I am confident that you will become a better painter by picking up pencil and paper.

Schedule: Saturday, Sunday, Monday 10am-5pm (1 hour lunch break)

Day 1: Block-in drawing - Two dimensional and three dimensional problem solving practices.

Day 2: Building up form – Understanding value relationships and practical techniques using graphite and chalk.

Day 3: Polishing and refining - Seeing and understanding details in their right place, striving for tactile form experience.
